How to unblock a slow-draining sink
Most kitchen-sink blockages are grease and food debris in the trap. Here's how to clear it without damaging the pipework.
1. Try a plunger first
Block the overflow with a wet cloth, fill the basin with a few cm of water, and plunge firmly for 30 seconds. The pressure usually dislodges soft blockages.
2. Clean the trap
Place a bucket under the U-bend, unscrew both ends by hand, and clear the debris. Soft brush the threads, refit, and run the tap to test.
3. Avoid chemical drain cleaners
Caustic drain cleaners damage chrome, plastic and your skin. They rarely fix the cause and can make a plumber's job more dangerous.
