How to find and turn off your stopcock

If water is coming through the ceiling, the first thing that matters is finding your stopcock. Here's where to look.

    Where to look

Most often under the kitchen sink. Otherwise try a downstairs toilet or cloakroom, the airing cupboard, under the stairs, or near the front door. In flats it can be in a hallway cupboard or riser.

    How to turn it off

Turn the tap clockwise until it stops. If it's stiff, don't force it with tools — it can snap. Open the cold taps to drain the system after.

    If water is near electrics

Turn off the electricity at the consumer unit if it's safe to reach without touching water. Don't touch sockets or switches that are wet.

Do it before you need it

Find and test your stopcock now, label it, and tell everyone in the house — including tenants — where it is.
